Palestinian vote showdown opens

Under: Palestine @ 11:53 pm on Tuesday, 01.24.06

Palestinians have begun casting their votes in the first parliamentary election to be held for a decade.

The governing Fatah party faces a strong challenge from the militant Islamic group Hamas, which is fielding candidates for the first time.

Israel and the US have said they will not work with a government that includes Hamas members.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has urged people to vote and ordered the security forces to prevent disruption.

The election run-up has been marred by violence but the main militant groups have said they will ensure calm.

Some 13,000 Palestinian policemen and security personnel have been deployed to protect polling stations on Wednesday.

Nearly 1.5m Palestinians are eligible to vote at about 1,000 centres in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which opened at 0700 (0500 GMT). Some will also cast their ballot in occupied East Jerusalem.

This great day will be of historic significance, a decisive step on the road to freedom and independence

Mahmoud Abbas

This is obviously a positive development, but we as a world are at least 50 years behind schedule. What happened to the UN resolutions concerning the occupied territories? How come the public opinion gets mobilized whenever a state invades another, countries claim UN resolutions to go to war, but all is silent in this case?

Congratulations to Hamas.
We are all Palestinian when it comes down to it. I may not share the same beliefs or tactics in order to reach a legitimate Palestinian state. But i think that is important that they won. I think Palestinians all want to be leaders and no followers, now we have a government that represents us all, and it may be easier for us to have some momentum towards a strong future if we can all sit and talk about our ideas and plan together. This may once and for all unite all Palestinians and make us love one another and set forth in mind that Palestine is the issue, not our own agendas. Ashat Falasteen!
