It’s Not Just a “Piece of Cloth”…

Under: How Outrageous, Palestine @ 12:24 pm on Monday, 01.30.06

I read in today’s news that some schools in Gaza have banned the Flag Salutation and Palestinian National Anthem from its daily morning program.

I am not exactly sure what called for such action, but I find it very outrageous to say the very least.

Some may take the flag as just “a piece of cloth” with no significance, however I find it a very symbolic representation of one’s country. In Palestine’s case, particularly, it’s very crucial that we hold on to it as it is the symbol of our identity, our country … and this is what we are fighting for!

Generally, I would say that saluting one’s flag and singing the national anthem everyday is a tad bit extreme for most societies. However, in the case of certain countries I can see why it’s done and the need for it - Palestine being one of them where it is very important to keep people’s sense of national identity since they are fighting for the existence of their state.

For what reason?

Anyhow, I recall in my school days,we were forbidden to walk (if you’re late for the “estefaaf al sabahi”,or talk when the “salam al malaki” and the flag was raised each morning, while on the other hand when The daily Qura’an was played it was perfectly normal to walk or talk , we werent even shushed.

Why do you think it’s a bit extreme? I don’t think the daily flag ‘pledge of allegiance’ and national anthem in schools is extreme at all …

Ohoud , I am not sure what the reason is … and I am not sure what the students’ reaction to this has been. As far as what you’ve experienced in school … so much for discipline. How pathetic!
