You’ll Definitely Scream!
Before I have even heard of these extremely wacky ice cream flavors, ice cream was never a favorite of mine. I just don’t like ice cream!any.way…
Used in a wide variety of culinary dishes soy sauce is said to be “the flavor of Japan.” which is great, but for them to make an ice cream out of it…now that’s more than wacky. Soy sauce ice cream was not a simple choice to lead, though, considering it was competing against such flavors as pit viper, Indian curry, miso ramen and salad. And it was hard to choose soy sauce over the Pearl of the Orient — Pearl-flavored ice cream. How do pearls taste like anyway?
Okay, I love all types of sea food, but this is taking it a bit too far. Some of the wacky world of Japanese ice cream include:
Fish Ice Cream (Sanma Aisu) Something must smell fishy about ice cream flavored with saury, a saltwater fish popular in Japan…But there’s no worries about that with this offering from Kimura Shoten as the fishy fumes have been drowned out by liberal doses of brandy. Not the greatest tasting ice cream on earth, though … no kidding!
Squid Ice Cream (Ika Aisu) Not wanting to give octopus ice cream a leg-up, Kimura Shoten used the extra legs available to step forward with Squid Ice Cream. And that’s no squidding. Ewww!
Ox Tongue Ice Cream (Gyutan Aisu) What better to tickle the taste buds than tongues? Though Ox Tongue Ice Cream may not be the first delicacy to come to mind, its taste is nothing to beef about. Are they serious?
Fried Eggplant Ice Cream (Yaki Nasu Aisu) Eggplant is a mainstay of the Japanese diet, appearing regularly on such dishes as pizza and in sandwiches. Becoming an ice cream flavor was merely a matter of time. I love eggplant…this may not be so bad to try…I think!
Chicken Wing Ice Cream (Nagoya Tebasaki) Nagoya is famous for its poultry, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the taste of this ice cream is best described as foul. It actually tastes like a fried chicken wing, which is fine if that’s what you’re eating, but not if you’re tucking into some ice cream… Maybe it would have been more appealing if it’s Hooters Chicken Wing Ice Cream! Check out more of The Wacky World of Japanese Ice-cream.
Now this is some of the Wackier World of Japanese Ice Cream include:
Goat Ice Cream(Yagi Aisu)Goats are known for eating absolutely anything … those brave enough to taste test this Japanese ice cream may do will to adopt a similar attitude. Made with, of course, goat’s milk, but also containing plenty of the rest of the animal, it’s little wonder this billy goat’s gruff. This is too crazy!notice the facial expressions in the photo? It sure sucks to be them - or is it just one person?
Spinach Ice Cream(Horenso Aisu)This ice cream will really pop eyes! No longer will frustrated parents have to urge their children to eat their greens if they want to have their dessert. Now, Spinach Ice Cream will let kids kill two birds with one stone by eating their veggies and ice cream at the same time. That’s promising!
Check out all of the wackier world of Japanese ice cream falvors. These ice creams can all be found in the Cup Ice Museum, part of Ice Cream City inside Namjatown theme park in Tokyo’s Toshima-ku. I firmly believe that the Japanese should just stick to cars and electronics!
