[...] This evening’s get together made me think about my time spent online…My time online from work is defined…and - believe it or not - has a purpose …from home, for the most it has a purpose other than just passing time… I hardly log on MSN chat …in fact, even though I’m very particular about those I add to my MSN, the majority of my contacts have been either deleted and blocked or just blocked … I’ve talked about this before…but now, and again I’m starting to wonder how real is e-friendship…a friendship that is missing the human face to face interaction? … [...]

[...] I have read an article by Iman about the Online vs. Real Life, and I have connected what she said to what I read. Could virtual ever replace real? Are we willing to give up the real interaction with real people to save time, effort, and money? Is it worth losing our human touch? Virtual meetings could extend from business and work meetings to family and friends meetings. We would be living a life where planes do not exist anymore. We simply would not need them to bring us closer -physically- to people we know. [...]

Summer, you're right...the way I interact online is just the same way I would interact face to face...there is no need to be any different. Some of the friends I met online,I have yet to meet in person. Like Shaden and Rihab ... I do consider them good friends and care about them just like I care about any of my other friends that I see on a regular basis.

Hamzeh, Shaden is intersted in your thoughts...So, why don't you 'feel like it' already!

7ala, thank you :)

the online world is a world of its own but somehow we tend to interact with it like it is part of our real world...at least i do! I made many good friends through this medium. I keep in touch with them till today, i worry about them when they are in trouble and in need, they are good friends but far away from me physically, a lot of them i have never met but i do not mind meeting one day, and for some i might never meet at all, but i still feel they are close to me. On the other hand, i have “real life” friends that i keep in touch with and i feel the same way towards them just like my online friends... there was some disappointment when meeting people i met online. trying to match the picture you have in your head for this person to the real person you are meeting at times was not a good match at all..and the personal touch you talked about is essential to make this connection between the online and the real personalities.
Just like the real world, the online world has good and bad..and we have to make our own choices in both worlds.
a very insightful post!

Devil's Mind, I think you're making it more complicated than it really does ...cyber space should never to a replacement for face to face interaction...

we tend to visit sites and discussion boards that we identify with in terms of content (and other things)...I draw the line of how much involved I am going to be and how much time I am going to take out of my day on those sites and discussion boards ...chats don't apply here because I don't use chat rooms and I am very particular as to whom I add to my MSN and or Yahoo!

An interesting perspective; Personally I have a more philosophical perspective (I can't really positively identify this, but I'm only judging by what you write here).

To spice up your thoughts imagine what would be different if intelligent robots were capable of handling discussions of wide variety of points of views. Would it really matter behind the comments, chats, replies, ...etc is a real person or a computer? How would you feel if the person behind those comments was a "fake" identity (like how some guys imitate girls in chat)?... Does it make a difference? How much? And Why?

I'll not give you answers to those questions, but maybe you can ponder on those questions...
