On Goodness?

Student: Master, how is goodness to be achieved?

Master: To those who offer you goodness, return goodness. To those who offer you evil, also return goodness. Thus, goodness is achieved.

I guess this could be considered one way of spreading the influence of your goodness!

Luke Skywalker: Jedi Master Yoda, how is goodness to be achieved?

Master Yoda: Goodness return also evil you offer who those to. Goodness return, goodness you offer who those to. Achieved is goodness thus.

I have came across a Ghani quote yesterday which impressed me. He said “An eye for an eye, would set the whole world blind”

I admire this man, and how he helped his people face evil with goodness. Something we (the arabs) dont seem to comprehend yet.

Disagree… Why would I bother showing “goodness” to someone who offers evil, in fact why deal with them in the first place? Although I don’t agree with the “an eye for an eye” principle (which in itself shows a lack of principles), I’m not a fan of “turning the other cheek” either (which is foolish).

Rihab, there is a difference between turning the other cheek out of weakness where you keep the evil amused, and by turning the other cheek out of love and strength where you communicate with the goodness in the heart of the other peson so that both can defeat the evilness in him.

People have both goodness and evilness in them. They are neither devils nor saints. It isn’t foolish to know how to address the goodness and make it work for all.

I applied to MIT before going to college, and they asked me to do an interview with a Jordanian MIT alum. At the end of the interview he asked me to describe myself in one word. I thought about what could be the one trait that I care most about in myself that I could use here and I immediately said “good” (from goodness). He didn’t get it of course. He asked “Good? Not excellent?” I sighed and explained.

In the end, it turned out I wasn’t “good” enough for MIT :D

Well, on a day-to-day basis, when I come across someone who’s kinda mean, I’m not gonna spend time trying to search for the goodness buried somewhere deep in their soul. Someone who mistreats me is generally unworthy of my time, so I will put them in their place and move on - life’s too short to waste on annoying people.
