I love dabkeh…It’s an awesome dance that - I admit - I rock at  … One thing I wish we had here in Chicago is an authentic ‘Middle Eastern’ hang out spot… All Arab related spots attract the losers in our community! I would love to be able to go to a decent restaurant or club and enjoy an evening comprised of a bit of oud, flute, a bit of tableh and dabkeh… In the meantime, these guys (notice the first comment for this video ;) and this girl (hahah..this is outside some local restaurant!) inspired me to hold my own personal dabkeh evenings at my own place…
Searching YouTube, I came across some (I love this!) really (I like the song and words more than the actual dabkeh moves. Our dear hamsawees and fatahwees need to be listening to this just right about now..maybe it’ll knock some sense in their little selfish minds!) good ones and some really hahahah…what the hell are they doing?? ) hilarious ones..(and what the hell is he doing!? hahaha..but I like the song! it got me in the mood for a night of tarab and a cigarette!)
and though I kind of Really liked this, I’m no so sure about mixing bellydancing with dabkeh!

(P.S. I hate Mondays! :)

I have mastered the art of bellydancing while smoking a cigarette. The trick is to make smoke come out of the belly button. It’s really quite extraordinary. The men love it :)

When I posted my dabkeh moves on YouTube, there wasn’t a SINGLE positive comment. Not one. But I’m not discouraged. I’ll show them. I’ll show all of you. You haven’t heard the last of me. I’m thinking of making a video combining dabkeh with square dancing.

I love dabkeh as well, and you’re right about decent Arab hangouts, there are none. Even the ones here in Toronto I’m hesitant to go to because of sleazy guys and everyone makes the scene out to be about argeelah and Nancy Ajram look alikes, nothing to do with actual Arab culture :p
Here’s another dabkeh performance (2 parts)

The key to great dabkeh is concentration. I believe that the best test to see if someone is a good dabkeh dancer is to get them to dance while reciting the value of pi to the 100th decimal place. Multi-tasking can help develop dabkeh focus.

I would like to see a “Dancing with the Stars” spin-off entitled “Dabkeh with the Stars”. Lets see if Jerry Springer can manage that without breaking a hip.

Thanks Iman. If we want our community center to be successful, WE MUST START a Dabkeh group and also teach Dabkeh.

by far the funniest dabkeh video I’ve seen is this one:

Queenie–what a coincidence that the videos you linked to are from my university and the people doing dabkeh are some of my friends; they’ve been winning in this dance competition for the past few years :)

queenie, so I guess it’s not just Chicago’s hang outs then. Thanks for the links!

dancing mathematician & effervescent freeloader, you’re the same person …and I admit you’re hilarious…

Laila, I would love to, that would be so awesome…I might be able to teach them a few moves myself lol. can we also go to zawadeh?!

mo, you’re missing out!

falasteenyia, practice…you’ll pick up on it!

Kerr, Hello! how many times did I suggest it? But you know what..SOME people don’t like to take my suggestions seriously! And yes Kerr that was the song I said they should listen to!

moi, lol…at least they’re in shape… Your friends do a good job at dabkeh.
