Search for Common Ground has announced the recipients of this year’s annual Eliav-Sartawi Awards for Middle Eastern Journalism. These Awards are given annually to recognize and encourage journalism that contributes to better understanding between people in the Middle East. The winning articles provide insight into regional issues and debates, contribute to political dialogue, expose readers to new perspectives and help to lay the groundwork for peaceful solutions to Middle Eastern conflict.
The Awards are named after two courageous pioneers of the Palestinian-Israeli dialogue. Dr. Issam Sartawi, recognized internationally, culminating in him being awarded the Kreisky Prize of Austria in 1979. He was assassinated in April 1983 in a hotel lobby in Lisbon, Portugal while participating in the building of the peace process. A: I hate to gossip… I really do…especially that I’m a soon to be mother. I feel that I need to set an example for my baby.
B: Okay, but you’re not gossiping…
A: I’m not now, but I am about to start…
B: Oh…then, don’t think of it as gossip…just think of it as knowledge sharing…
Driving south-bound…right in front of me were two cars decorated with wedding decorations…
At the same time….
Looking on to my left, north-bound, a funeral procession…

— Grading my students’ 3 –page narrative essays; first assignment of the semester which was due back in August! Despite having a full time job, I’ve taken up teaching part time…either on weekends or nights. It worked perfectly fine with my previous job and though I switched jobs since the last time I taught, I did not think continuing with teaching would be a problem. However, the first week of the semester was almost hell. Work was extremely busy during that time and was expected to get even busier (Read on …)
Marcel Khalife is simply amazing … a true cultural icon… Despite facing some challenges in his North America tour, he comes to Chicago November 17th bringing with him his long known voice of reconciliation, peace, and hope… I am looking forward to his performance and will not miss it for anything - I’m skipping on a Las Vegas trip that weekend (with, umm, my sister-in-law’s parents
)…seeing him and hearing his beautiful music and voice live tops Vegas any day!!!
He was here in November of 2004… And this is what i wrote back then:
Marcel Khalife is simply amazing … a true cultural icon…He was in Chicago this past Sunday. The theater was full of a lively & attentive yet silent crowd. Lively & attentive when Marcel encouraged sing along and clapping, and silent that you can hear a pin drop when he requested pure silence for pieces that call for that!
I am not the only one who sees Marcel as a cultural icon; Mahmoud Darwish says, “In Khalife’s song there is useful beauty and clear purposefulness…He brought back the absent emotional space needed to reconcile poetry with its alienated audience. Now, the streets sing with Marcel and words need a podium no longer.” and I must say, on Sunday the large Arab American audience proved this to be true. (Read on …)
Her first time in Amman was for her wedding last September…She was there for a week. She’s there now for a second time visiting her in-laws…
Me: Hope you’re enjoying your time?
She: I am, but I’m homesick. I miss you guys.
Me: Aww..I don’t miss you…we’re not going anywhere…enjoy your time…
She: I miss Chicago…
Me: It’ll be here when you come back…
So, what do you think of the girls in Amman so far? (I have issues with a lot of girls back home so I like to get others’ perspective on that!)
She: They are really really stuck up here. They give me dirty looks. Don’t be surprised if I told you I slapped one.
