I think the media is put in a sensitive spot when covering such stories... It's one thing to report an incident and another to make it headlines and give it so much focus ... when the media is constantly repeating the story and focusing on the psychos who do it, it - in a way - is glorifying it...and so ideas start generating in sick minds... and they too wanna become famous!
