Judgment in this case refers to assessing whether these people are good or bad. I do not condone prostitution, because it is simply a flagrant human abuse. However, I do not label prostitutes as evil, because they are mainly victims of a greedy and apathetic society.

muhoudi, Hi … I’ve come across some in my undergrad years too. Anyway, I don’t think it’s that these particular women have to … It’s more that they probably want to.
mmm, judging? in what sense? I think I have a problem with this term. I believe we often misuse it.

Anyway. I started reading the book, and so far I am not too impressed with the quality of writing. But I will finish it, hopefully. and perhaps come back again to write my thoughts on it here.

I do not find this too surprising since some people including collage students do not perceive call girls as prostitutes. During my college years I met at least couple of female students who confess being call girls. It was a great shock to me since both are intelligent, ambitious and amazingly well cultured women. I felt saddened that these really nice women have to do this to achieve their goals, but I stopped judging people as I grew older.

za3tar, maybe what really drove her to do it is the fact that she ‘wanted’ to do it …maybe it’s something she enjoyed. We’ll see what she has to say.

Why are you shocked?

I don’t know what the back asks. I have not received the book yet, and finding a basic review like all other books out there was very difficult, but managed to get a brief introduction (which is up there). So you can share those questions here, or I’ll just have to wait for the book!

Natalia, welcome to my site. You’re right. Each has their reason and each reason is valid in its own. But I still find it a degrading job…and like I mentioned in my comment to za3tar, maybe she did enjoy it. All those questions should be answered in her ‘confessions.’ or so I hope. I’ll be back after I read it …

People who work in the sex industry come from different walks of life, and all of their experiences are equally valid. As a writer, I’ve spoken to people who hated it and got out the first chance they had, people who loved it, people who treated it like any other job. Some are deeply traumatized by their experiences, others shrug off the bad and concentrate on what they like about the job, and so on.

This sounds like an interesting book. I doubt that sex-work was the author’s only choice, but she probably figured she’d enjoy it (and hey, it beats many teaching gigs, or so some women would say).

Hmm .. sounds like a very interesting book. However, for some reason i find it very hard to believe the premise (although i haven’t read the book). I mean, would a Harvard, MIT, and London School of Econ. professor really ever resort to becoming a call girl just for the money ?

One would think that given the respectable status of this person, she would be able to easily take out a loan or something if she was in need of money. So, i do have a hard time believing the premise .. however, this should be an interesting read nonetheless.

In my opinion, it’s not about dignity as much as it’s about humanity. I can not imagine a normal person who doesn’t mind being used and/or reduced to such an animal-like state. When I think about it, it feels disgusting, abusive and abnormal. But I would love to read the book to know how SHE feels about it!
