Missing those nights on my parents’ back veranda…

P.S. I don’t understand why many Arab young men find it ‘disrespectful’ to smoke in front of their parents. Seriously. Especially if your parents are smokers themselves. My father lights one for me. My mother, on the other hand, just recently gave up chasing me around the house when ever I light one.

If I see my son/daughter smoking, I’ll throw him out of the balcony.

(but little drinking is ok :)

Me and dad smoke together , I don’t understand these people too , What’s so bad about smoking in front of your parents ? , It’s not like your cursing in front of them or something , These Arabian habits make me sick !!

It is disrespectful to smoke in front of your parents/elders. You would be surprised but in some cultures sitting and watching TV in front of elders is considered disrespectful too. It doesn’t stop here, sitting improperly (with legs streched out or with crossed legs) is also considered disrespectful and I do respect the culture so I abide by it and try to teach the same to my children. Its all about respect which you don’t see in the kids these days especially the ones raised in western countries.

off topic, but i had to comment. When someone uses “Arabian” to describe “Arab” culture/habits, it makes me giggle.

    ahhh, how exotic :D

Doc, you’re not as kewl as I’ve always thought. I’d take cigarettes over a drink any minute!:P

Ali, marhaba and welcome to my site. Well, I am sure they have their reasons — reasons I’d like to understand.

Babbi, hello and welcome! Why do you think it’s disrespectful to smoke in front of your parents/elders? mmm, I respect the culture as well, relatively speaking. There are certain aspects of culture that I consider too archaic … too demented and I just cannot bring myself to conform to such aspects…

To your last point, I don’t think being raised in the West lessens the degree of respect one has.

secratea, hahah! yeah, use of Arabian annoys me as well. What’s exotic? my hand? Thank you. HAHAHAH!

But secratea el dukhan kteer zaki. Especially after a good meal! :)
