Madness

I am appalled by the seemingly never ending miseries that are witnessed every single day across the globe. It’s very nasty out there…

The latest school shooting takes place at NIU!

This is the first alert that went up on the NIU homepage:

3:20 p.m.
There has been a report of a possible gunman on campus. Get to a safe area and take precautions until given the all clear. Avoid the King Commons and all buildings in that vicinity.

With minutes left in a class in ocean sciences at Northern Illinois University on Thursday afternoon, a tall skinny man dressed all in black stepped out from behind a curtain on the stage of the lecture hall, said nothing, and opened fire with a shotgun, the authorities and witnesses said. Killing 7 and injuring more than 20.

When the gunman first burst in, Mr. McEnery said, the classroom turned loud and chaotic with some students shouting, “He has a gun!” and “Call 911!”

Then came an eerie silence, but for the bullets. “Once he settled in and started shooting people, pretty much everyone was quiet,”

The gunman had been a graduate student in sociology at the university in 2007, but was no longer enrolled. Records suggested that the man, who had more recently attended a different state school, had no previous police contact, the authorities said.

This is sick! It rally is a jungle out there!
My prayers go out to the victims and condolences to their families as they try to cope with their loss.

Those laffy taffy moments…

My love for laffy taffy candy is a deeply rooted part of my childhood … I’ve always loved this chewy fruity flavored candy for its taste and more importantly for its jokes on every wrapper…yummy, a real treat!! some are so so so silly, but that’s what makes those laffy taffy moments so special :D and what still makes me laugh out loud as I unwrap each joke…such as:
What did the judge say to the skunk?
Odor in the court [ahahahaha:D] (Read on …)

Like, totally…

I hate - hate is actually an understatement - my train daily commute…

It disgusts me …

It is the worst thing to start my day off with …

and the worst thing to end my day with …

I don’t want to smell chicken wings at 8 am nor do I want to hear finger licking…Gross! use a napkin instead of your mouth…I touch the same rail your disgusting fingers touch! and who the hell eats chicken wings this early in the morning anyway?!

I don’t want to hear tasteless crappy rap at 8 am…they tell you to ‘please be considerate when listening to electronic devices as to not disturb other customers’…Secondhand music is way worse than secondhand smoking! it really is! don’t force everyone on the train to listen to your crap!

People stink in this city! They really need to start taking more showers in the week…

Annoying other people on the train is not a real job … beggars need to get another job!

One of the things I cannot stand what-so-ever is cinnamon. I hate it…the smell of it makes me wanna vomit! and it seems that every single damn morning and every single evening, someone on the crappiest trains in the entire States has to be chewing - like a cow - big red cinnamon gum! I am not kidding!

Whistling through out the entire train ride is aggravating … no one wants to listen to that mixed with humming, and crap rap, the smell of chicken wings, body odor AND cinnamon every day!!

I feel the need to soak myself in disinfectant daily…

A Legend…

Marcel Khalife is simply amazing … a true cultural icon… Despite facing some challenges in his North America tour, he comes to Chicago November 17th bringing with him his long known voice of reconciliation, peace, and hope… I am looking forward to his performance and will not miss it for anything - I’m skipping on a Las Vegas trip that weekend (with, umm, my sister-in-law’s parents :D )…seeing him and hearing his beautiful music and voice live tops Vegas any day!!!

He was here in November of 2004… And this is what i wrote back then:

Marcel Khalife is simply amazing … a true cultural icon…He was in Chicago this past Sunday. The theater was full of a lively & attentive yet silent crowd. Lively & attentive when Marcel encouraged sing along and clapping, and silent that you can hear a pin drop when he requested pure silence for pieces that call for that!

I am not the only one who sees Marcel as a cultural icon; Mahmoud Darwish says, “In Khalife’s song there is useful beauty and clear purposefulness…He brought back the absent emotional space needed to reconcile poetry with its alienated audience. Now, the streets sing with Marcel and words need a podium no longer.” and I must say, on Sunday the large Arab American audience proved this to be true. (Read on …)

…or so she thought

snippets of a recent light hearted - and somewhat silly - conversation inspired by a group of Arab men hanging out in the parking lot of a strip mall in a Chicago Suburb one evening, greeting us with whistles as we passed by …
She: I remember when I first moved to Ramallah…walking down its streets felt very flattering… each time I passed by a guy he would say “aish ya lamoona” … “aish ya bateekha” … It felt so good…I felt special…no one has ever called me a lamoona* or a bateekha** … then seconds later, I hear the same guy say the same thing to another girl passing by. She continued with an obvious sarcastic tone, I didn’t feel so flattered or special anymore… I wanted to be the only lamoona…the only bateekha!

*lamoona: Lemon
**bateekha: Watermelon

Yours against theirs

Under: Uncategorized, Ugh!, Chicago @ 6:22 am on Wednesday, 03.7.07

I abhor being in a situation in which it’s my word against theirs…Particularly if theirs is that of an authoritative one! Yesterday as I was driving home from work, I noticed something on my dashboard. I thought it was a flyer of some sort…it wasn’t. It was a ticket for ‘failure to pay parking fee.’ I am very very very positive that I paid the parking fee. I can contest the ticket, but I need proof of my payment. How am I supposed to prove it? The parking lot payment option only consists of a large group of numbered slots that one is able to insert a dollar in; in other words there are no agents…I parked in spot 341, I inserted a dollar in slot 341. I don’t have a receipt. And I refuse to pay 35$ for something I did not do. I’m going to contest it nonetheless; I’m interested in the outcome when I stand before the judge and demand they wave it because I’m telling the truth and nothing but the truth … Of course I wont mention the two times I didn’t pay because I was rushing to…actually never mind…this may be evidence used against me when I appear in court :D
Though this incident is very minute next to the on going injustice many people through out the world experience, it nevertheless serves as a reminder of how an ugly feeling it is!

Do you love to complain?

Under: Uncategorized, People & Places, What I Love, Chicago, hahaha @ 11:18 am on Tuesday, 02.20.07

So many people do too…
SO If you are ever in need of venting, letting it all out, purging all that’s bottled inside of you and you want someone who is able to listen (in this case read) without judging you and inconsiderately telling you to stop complaining (not that they won’t but at least you won’t get to hear it right there and then) then here is your refuge. ILoveToComplain.com gives you the liberty to express yourself freely to a mass audience. I discovered this last week in the Red Eye, and since then I’ve been checking it daily :D some of the content on there cracks me up! Some people really have issues; makes me feel good about my complaints…

Go ahead; complain till you start complaining about complaining too much! Speaking of which, at which point does ‘complaining’ become too much? What’s the threshold for complaining? Or is there?

Thanks

What I’m looking forward to tonight:

1) Chips and dip, cheese fries, hot wings, nachos with piles and piles of cheese topped with piles and piles of jalapenos adding layers and layers of fat to those hips, (you know how it goes… moments on the lips, a life time on the hips) and some diet root beer..
2) Da Bears doing their shuffle.. because we’re going to win … tit’s true that our QB is not as experienced as the Colts’ but let’s hear it for sexy rexy …
Rex Grossman
Well they call me Sexy Rexy and I’m young and tough
Had a couple rough games, but I know I got the stuff
I’m an Indiana boy, at home on a farm,
I like throwing it deep and showing off my arm
Staying cool under pressure, is the key
And if we get behind, we’ve always got our D
I’ve got my doubters, but watch me, girl
My Super Bowl Shuffle’s gonna shock the world

wohoo!

3) Half time show …Prince will be rockin’

4) Commercials … big bucks involved, so they better be good!

Why oh why?? why do people assume that I’m, sometimes, outta my mind?
Something just happened, and my mood changed from pissed off, upset, disappointed, angry, frustrated to ahhh, isn’t this journey called life such an exciting adventure?! I love it!

Lovie here, and he’s a soul man
When it comes to winning, he’s got the plan
Ladies love Lovie, he always look fly
Now that Ditka’s gone, he’s the guy
“Da Coach” and leader, of Papa Bear’s boys
Come on Chicago, make some noise…

woHoooo!

Duh moment!

As I walking inside a restaurant to buy some falafel and bread this morning, a young beautiful woman walking side by side me got in line first …

Beautiful woman: Can I have a dozen falafel?

Cashier: Sure.

Beautiful woman: But first, can you tell me how many pieces come in a dozen?

Cashier: (with a smile) 12.

Beautiful woman: hehehe thanks. A dozen it is then.

hahahah … maybe classifying that under ‘beauty or brain’ category is a bit too harsh, for we all can have one of those ‘duh moments!’ I speak of experience of course!
